A Hunting trip to Maryland

I had the opportunity to join friends in Maryland for a couple days of scoter and brant hunting.  I had never had the opportunity to hunt brant so I was really looking forward to this hunt.  I had the opportunity to hunt with Jeff at Pitboss Waterfowl a few years ago and had a spectacular trip.  I couldn’t wait to go again.

This year we sandwiched a day of sea duck hunting between two days of brant hunting.  Late season hunting is always challenging, but Jeff worked hard to keep us on birds.  Fort he scoter hunt, we went out in the ocean off of Ocean City Maryland.  The wind was gusting to over 40 knots but we really were never uncomfortable.  Scoter hunting is one of my favorite hunts and there is truly few birds as spectacular as a drake surf scoter.  Our brant hunts were tough, but we finally convinced a couple groups and everyone was able to harvest a nice brant.  Mine is on the way to Harry Whitehead at Gunners Taxidermy to commemorate the trip.

In the end, we had a great hunt and a lot of fun on the Maryland coast.  It was my first time to visit the Ward Museum.  Checking out the antique decoys was truly a highlight of the trip.  We also checked out Assateague Island and around Ocean City.

If you ever get the opportunity, I highly recommend hunting with Jeff.  It is an experience you will not forget.  Check him out at Pitboss Waterfowl
